Gunkanmaki
- "Gunkan" means "battleship" in Japanese and these little sushi do resemble a little boat looking to be filled with flavorful passengers.
- These are perfect for filling with various caviars, salmon and uni roe that are difficult to serve otherwise.
- Also a good way to serve a spicy tuna mix or assorted fish tartars which are a little more difficult to roll in a traditional maki.
Ingredients
- nori strips, about one inch wide
- sushi rice, about a tablespoon
- 1 teaspoon of roe. salmon, tobiko or uni or a spicy tuna mix- your choice
- 3 thin cucumber slices, cut in half
Directions
- Prepare a bowl of water that is 30% rice vinegar for moistening your fingers.
- Form the rice into a shape similar to the nigiri. Lay the rice on your board and wrap the nori strip around it completly. There should be about 1/2 inch of nori above the rice. Either moisten the loose end of the nori with water or use a grain of rice as glue. Now you have a small "boat" to fill
- Stand the cucmber slices on the inside and add your topping.
